[edit] History

[edit] Background

Zhang Jiao ( 140 AD - 184 AD ) was the Taoist leader and religius of the rebellion known as the Yellow Turban Rebellion. He was the founder of the philosophy known as The Way of Peace, which he preached to the people of China. His two brothers, Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang, assisted him in preaching The Way of Peace.

[edit] Rise of the Yellow Turbans

Zhang Jiao first received the book called The Essential Art of Great Peace while gathering medical herbs. It was apparently given to him by an old man in the mountains that called himself an old immortal spirit. With this book, Zhang Jiao and his two brothers preached this philosophy and gained a massive following. Then, Zhang Jiao rebelled against the Han with nearly 500,000 followers in the rebellion known as the Yellow Turban Rebellion.

[edit] Fall of the Yellow Turbans

To act against the rebellion, various local lords were called up to action. Among these men were Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Jian, who's efforts ended up defeating Zhang Jiao's rebellion. But, Zhang Jiao's death came early; in the year 184 AD, Zhang Jiao died, before his forces were even defeated. Many of his followers still remained loyal to The Way of Peace, though, and they had not all been killed. Even after their major defeat due to the efforts of Cao Cao, Sun Jian, and Liu Bei, there were still many sudden, yet drastically smaller, uprisings from them.
